Alberta Opens New Growth Market for Top US Online Gambling Operators
Alberta’s regulated online gambling market is giving America’s biggest sportsbook and casino operators one of the few major expansion opportunities left in North America, with brands racing to establish themselves from day one ahead of one of the busiest sporting periods of the year.
Launching on July 13, Alberta becomes Canada’s second regulated commercial iGaming market after Ontario, opening the door for operators to offer online sportsbooks and casinos under a competitive licensing model. The timing also coincides with heightened betting activity surrounding the FIFA World Cup, making an early launch particularly valuable for operators looking to acquire customers.
Brands Race to Establish an Early Presence
Among the operators expected to launch immediately are DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM, Caesars, BetRivers and bet365, extending the Canadian presence that many of them established in Ontario.
For operators, going live from the beginning is seen as a key competitive edge. Greg Karamitis, DraftKings’ Executive Vice President and General Manager of Sports, stated that major sporting events offer vital chances to attract new customers. He emphasized that missing these moments could result in losing players to rival platforms.
Ahead of launch, DraftKings is hosting a World Cup watch party in Calgary, continuing a series of fan events previously held in cities including Los Angeles, Dallas, Miami and Hoboken. The operator expects football, hockey and Canadian Football League betting to play central roles in its Alberta strategy.
How the Ontario Experience Is Shaping Alberta’s Strategy
Rather than treating Alberta as an entirely new market, operators are applying lessons learned from Ontario’s 2022 launch.
Karamitis said understanding local sports preferences is essential, noting DraftKings has invested heavily in hockey betting while tailoring its product around Alberta’s passionate fan bases, including the Edmonton Oilers and the CFL’s Alberta franchises.
The company also plans to launch both DraftKings Sportsbook & Casino and Golden Nugget Online Casino, replicating the dual-brand model it already operates successfully in Ontario.
BetMGM is entering with more than 4,000 casino games, progressive jackpots and MGM Rewards integration, while FanDuel is expanding both its sportsbook and casino offerings after extending its partnership with the Canadian Football League to include Alberta.
Canada Remains a Key Growth Market
Unlike the United States, where new regulated markets have become increasingly rare, Alberta offers operators the chance to grow both sportsbook and online casino businesses simultaneously.
Industry figures indicate dozens of operators have already completed Alberta’s registration process ahead of launch, with many expected to be live from opening day.
For major North American gambling companies, Alberta represents more than another provincial launch. It marks the next phase of Canadian expansion as operators compete to build market share in one of the continent’s newest regulated online gambling jurisdictions.
