Casino Growth in Ontario Continues with Record April Revenues
Canada’s iGaming market is entering a golden era, with Ontario at the forefront of this impressive growth. As the largest and most active province for legal online gambling, Ontario continues to set the standard for regulated casino gaming and sports betting. The first quarter of 2025 has already delivered record-breaking results, further solidifying the region’s status as a leader in North American iGaming.
April 2025, in particular, was a landmark month for Ontario’s iGaming market, generating a staggering CAD $313.5 million (approximately USD $228.4 million) in total revenue. Online casinos led the way with CAD $242 million (USD $176.9 million), marking a 1% month-over-month increase.
Sports betting also saw a major resurgence, with revenue jumping 35% from March to reach CAD $64.5 million (USD $46.9 million). Meanwhile, online poker declined by 11%, contributing just CAD $5.9 million (USD $4.3 million) to the overall figure. Despite a dip in year-over-year share, sports betting bounced back strongly from March to April. Revenue jumped by 35%, pushing its contribution to total market earnings from 16% to 21%. Key sporting events played a major role in this surge. The NHL playoffs, featuring five of Canada’s seven teams, spurred significant betting interest.
In terms of market share, casino gaming remains dominant, accounting for 78% of total revenue. Sports betting followed with 21%, while poker held a modest 1%.
Casino games also led in betting volume, capturing 84% of total wagers placed, a slight rise from 83% the year prior. Sports betting dropped to 14%, highlighting the fluctuating nature of that segment.
Big Players, Big Moves
The rise of online casino gaming in Ontario is supported by top content creators like Pragmatic Play, which recently launched another hit title called Big Bass Boxing Bonus Round. This latest addition to the Big Bass series trades its iconic underwater setting for a boxing ring, introducing an action-packed twist to the beloved slot lineup.
Players can unlock the bonus round by landing three to five scatters, awarding up to 25 free spins. Unique red and blue wilds are tracked in separate meters, and every fourth wild adds 10 more spins while boosting multipliers up to 10x. When wilds appear without a win, the knockout feature may activate, reshuffling the reels for another shot at victory. This follows April’s release of Big Bass Bonanza 1000, underscoring Pragmatic Play’s commitment to keeping its content fresh and engaging.
