Mobile sports betting has transformed New York into one of the largest regulated wagering markets in the United States. That rapid growth has also sparked new conversations about consumer protection, particularly as prediction markets continue to gain attention alongside traditional sportsbooks.
Those topics will take center stage on August 17, when the New York State Bar Association (NYSBA) hosts a free one-hour webinar examining how both products work, where they differ, and the responsible gambling challenges they present.
The New Consumer Questions
Online sports betting has expanded quickly since New York launched its regulated market in 2022. According to the New York State Gaming Commission, bettors have already wagered nearly $58 billion through licensed mobile sportsbooks, making the state one of the country’s busiest betting jurisdictions.
At the same time, federally regulated prediction markets have introduced another way for consumers to speculate on sporting events and other outcomes. Their rapid emergence has created confusion among many consumers about how they differ from licensed sportsbooks and how each is regulated.
The webinar, titled “The New Gambling Landscape: Mobile Sports Betting and Prediction Markets,” will examine those distinctions while discussing why greater accessibility has increased the importance of responsible gambling education.
Recognizing Gambling Harm and Finding Support
Leading the session will be Katie Mibaum, team leader at the New York Council on Problem Gambling, who will discuss common warning signs of gambling-related harm, risk factors, and the ways gambling disorders can affect individuals, families, and professional life.
Attendees will also receive information on treatment options, support services, and other resources available to anyone experiencing gambling-related problems or looking to help someone else. The program aims to give participants a practical understanding of today’s gambling landscape rather than focusing solely on industry developments.
